Vavo Foundation: Towards a positive social impact for a sustainable future in disadvantaged areas in Greece.

Vavo Foundation seeks actively to achieve a broad, lasting and positive social impact for a sustainable future, particularly in remote and/or disadvantaged areas in Greece. The three main tools include: Vavo Academia, Vavo Dialogues and Vavo Estate.
1) Vavo Academia
The word academia, signifies a place dedicated to the arts, culture, and the diffusion of knowledge, a term that comes from the Greek school founded by the philosopher Plato.
Activities are focused on very important areas such as regional economic development, culture, education, environment, sustainability, etc
2) Vavo Dialogues
Promoting the dialogue to help remote Greek regions create a sustainable future. For example, to improve transport and internet links to remote regions, boost small and medium-sized enterprises in disadvantaged areas, invest in a cleaner environment and improve education and skills.
3) Vavo Estate

Smart specialisation : an innovative strategy for regional economic transformation

Smart specialisation is an innovative strategy for regional economic transformation and is now a key part of Europe’s efforts to help its regions work their way out of recession. It implies that a region selects a limited number of priorities on the basis of its own strengths and international specialisation. The strategy requires that support and investment actions are not fragmented and that Structural Funds are concentrated on a limited number of priorities, those with the highest development potential.

Greek diet: the key to a healthier life

 The traditional Greek diet, shaped by history and climatic conditions, meets the main criteria of an optimal diet: It has health-promoting properties and it is compatible with a sustainable environment.
In simplified terms, the traditional Greek diet relies on:
# high consumption of olive oil, which in Greece, more than in any other country, is extra-virgin;
# high consumption of vegetables, legumes, fruits, and unrefined cereals;
preference of fish over meat;
# emphasis on feta cheese and yogurt, rather than other dairy products.
# Moderate consumption of wine, mostly during meals.

The health-promoting properties of this diet have been documented in many populations, and in different historical periods. In the late 1960s, the original work of Ansell Keys (a distinguished American scientist who studied the influence of diet on health) on the Greek population gave credence to the notion that the traditional Greek diet represents a distinguished prototype of the traditional Mediterranean diet.
The traditional Greek diet has been found to increase longevity and to protect from serious diseases, such as coronary heart disease and several forms of cancer. See more here
